Professor Yu Haisui

    Professor Hai-Sui Yu is Dean of Engineering at the University of Nottingham.  He holds the Chair in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Nottingham and is the founding Director of the Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics, one of the largest and most active geotechnical groups in the UK.  Prior to this, he was Assistant Dean of Engineering (Research) at the University of Newcastle in Australia. He obtained a M.Sc. degree in Rock Mechanics from Imperial College in 1987, and a D.Phil. in Soil Mechanics from the University of Oxford in 1990. He was awarded a higher doctorate (D.Sc.) in 2000 by the University of Newcastle, NSW, for his published work in theoretical geomechanics. Over the last two decades, Professor Yu has also worked for various periods with many of the leading soil mechanics research groups in the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Austria, New Zealand, China, France and the UK.

    Professor Yu's main research activities have focused on theoretical and computational geomechanics, constitutive modelling, in-situ soil testing, and pavement & railway geotechnics. He has published two books and some 160 papers in leading international journals and conference proceedings, and has been awarded numerous medals and prizes for his research work, including the Chandra Desai medal for the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics in 2008, ISSMGE's first J K Mitchell Lecturer in 2004, Shamsher Prakash International Research Award in 2003, ICE's Telford Medal in 2000, and Australian Geomechanics Society's Trollope Medal in 1998.

    Professor Yu is the founding Editor-in-Chief of a newly launched international journal on Geomechanics and Geoengineering by Taylor and Francis. In addition, he has served or continues to serve on the editorial boards of a number of other leading international journals including Geotechnique, International Journal of Road Materials and Pavement Design, Acta Geotechnica, International Journal of Geomechanics, and Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, ASCE. He serves on two technical committees (TC3 and TC16) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and was also a member of the National Executive Committee of the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) from 2002-2004.
